A brain training app without a subscription
Keen has a one-time Premium purchase alongside monthly and yearly options. Try the free day first, then check the price shown in Google Play before choosing; a subscription is optional.
Disclosure: we make Keen. Many brain training apps are monthly or yearly subscriptions. If you would rather pay once and be done, Keen has a one-time Premium option, and it has no ads at all. Here is what you get, and what you should know first.
How does paying once work in Keen?
- First day free, no card. Your first day's plan is free, so you can try a full session before you pay anything.
- Then one payment of 99.99 US dollars. That unlocks Premium for good. No renewals to remember.
- Or a subscription, if you prefer. 7.99 US dollars a month, or 39.99 US dollars a year with a 7-day free trial. Cancel any time in Google Play.
Does Keen have ads or tracking?
Keen shows no ads. Usage analytics are optional. Paying once does not mean you pay with your data instead. Your Think answers stay on your phone.
What do you get with Keen?
- Eight adaptive games with 20 levels each, and a relaxed mode with no timers.
- Eight real-life lessons: names and faces, shopping lists, PINs and phone numbers, what you read, remembering to do things, where you put things, directions and routes, and everyday maths.
- Think: three short reasoning puzzles a day.
- Side Vision, calm mode and three text sizes.
What are the drawbacks?
- Android only. There is no iPhone version.
- You need an account. It keeps your progress and Premium tied to you.
- The one-time price is paid up front. If you are not sure you will stick with it, try the free first day, or start with the yearly plan's 7-day trial.
- It is not free after day one. If you want a fully free app, Keen is not it.

Lifetime, yearly or monthly: the sums
All prices are in US dollars. The yearly plan starts with a 7-day free trial.
| Plan | Price | Cost over 1 year | Cost over 2 years | Cost over 3 years |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | 7.99 a month | 95.88 | 191.76 | 287.64 |
| Yearly | 39.99 a year | 39.99 | 79.98 | 119.97 |
| Lifetime | 99.99 once | 99.99 | 99.99 | 99.99 |
Lifetime costs less than yearly once the third year starts. Lifetime costs less than monthly after about 13 months.
Not sure yet? Start with the free first day, or with the yearly plan's 7-day trial. You can decide after you have used the app.
Lifetime is a one-time in-app purchase in Google Play, not a subscription. It does not renew. Refunds for Play purchases go through Google Play's refund process.
How to tell if an app will charge you again
You do not have to guess. The store listing and the price screen usually say it plainly.
- On the Google Play listing, look for the line "In-app purchases". It means the app sells something inside, often a subscription.
- Read the price screen before you tap pay. Words like "per month", "per year" or "renews" mean it will charge you again.
- A one-time purchase says "once" or "lifetime". There is no renewal date on the receipt.
- After you pay, open the Play app, tap your profile icon, then Payments and subscriptions. Anything under Subscriptions will renew. A one-time purchase will not be listed there.
How to cancel a Keen subscription
Monthly and yearly Keen plans are Google Play subscriptions. You cancel them in the Google Play app, not inside Keen.
- Open the Google Play app on your phone.
- Tap your profile icon.
- Tap Payments and subscriptions.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Tap Keen.
- Tap Cancel subscription, then follow the prompts.
Cancelling stops the next charge. Premium stays until the end of the paid period you have already paid for.
Uninstalling the app does not cancel a subscription. If you delete Keen, Google Play will still charge you. Cancel first, then uninstall if you want to.
On the yearly plan, the first 7 days are a free trial. If you cancel inside those 7 days, you are not charged.
Your progress is kept in your free Keen account. It is not lost if Premium ends, or if you change phones.
